The Effect of Family-friendly Policy in a Life Course Perspective
Kim An-Na

Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine the effect of current family-friendly policies, which have been implemented in order to facilitate work-family balance, with special emphasis on the life course of employees. The approach of this paper is based on the idea that the family-friendly policy should start from the needs of employees and that such needs can vary according to the life course of the employee. The results of descriptive analysis show at first that the family-friendly policies currently being implemented need to be extended to cover from maternality and fertility support to child nurturing and care services. According to further analysis, the effect of family-friendly policies varies considerably by the employee¡¯s life course stage. For instance, flextime has positive effects on achieving work-family balance for the married employees with preschool or school children; maternal or child care leaves has positive effects for the single or married employees without children; and child nurturing and care services are found to have positive effects over the whole life course.
